    A LIFETIME COMMITMENT

In 2018, former North American Division (NAD) President Dan Jackson invited each union to adopt an island in the Guam-Micronesia Mission. These islands are part of the NAD. The Lake Union Conference was paired with Kosrae. Kosrae is 370 miles north of the equator between Guam and the Marshall Islands. It is 2,800 miles southwest of Hawaii. A Lake Union team visited Kosrae in early 2019 and was welcomed with open arms and grateful hearts. They witnessed the church members' commitment to bringing Christ to the 6,000 island inhabitants. The positive impact that the Kosrae SDA School is making in the lives of its students, many of whom are from non-Adventist homes, is unmistakable. Today, we are excited to share that the Kosrae SDA School has expanded and is currently offering high school classes.

Over 6,000 miles away, amid a beautiful sea of coral and laden with palm trees is the Lake Union’s adopted island of Kosrae.

Several years ago, each union in the North America Division adopted one of the nine major islands that make up the Guam Micronesia Mission.

For the past three years, students and church members across the Lake Union have been praying for our brothers and sisters who live on Kosrae. Many people in our Union also have helped to mail care packages since, for many months, ships were not allowed to deliver supplies to the islands due to COVID‒19. Many also have helped to raise funds to build a mission gym for their school.

My brother Jonah and I grew up hearing stories about the student missionary life from our family members. Our dad and uncle were student missionaries together in Majuro, while our aunt and uncle served in Pohnpei together. They shared their experiences about surfing and crazy teachers in the islands of the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.
